Why did you decide to enter in the recruitment industry?
I set up the company in 1997 because I saw an opportunity in the market for a specialised recruitment agency to focus on all aspects of the healthcare sector.
At the time there were a range of agencies focusing on specific areas (eg Sales, Clinical Research, Nurses, Doctors) but no one was taking a comprehensive approach. Understanding the sector and appreciating the holistic nature of healthcare made me realise the value of building an organisation that could provide recruitment services across a range of different and synergistic fields. Ultimately for our candidates this means that we have a range of opportunities to discuss and for our clients we have access to deep and broad talent pools of healthcare specialists.
What was it about healthcare that appealed to you?
Healthcare is a very rewarding sector because our work affects the lives of so many people. Through placing specialised candidates into specialised positions we’re involved in the development of new medicines and new medical technologies that bring real benefits to patients; and we’re providing the healthcare professionals involved in the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients.
Everyday we are learning something new about healthcare. Through our conversations we are hearing about advances in healthcare and the delivery of healthcare, new treatments, new clinical trial results, new ways of working and new technologies. From this we are able to provide insight and shape the working practices and cultures of our clients.
Tell us about your most memorable role/placement. What were the challenges and achievements?
Over the years I’ve been involved in placing 1000s of great candidates into 100s of leading organisations, and every placement has been so rewarding because of the value that is ultimately being delivered to patients. The candidates placed are working across the entire spectrum of healthcare.
What education background do you have that helps you with your current job?
Prior to starting the company I completed a medical degree, a PhD in Pathology and an MBA, and everyday I draw on this background to understand the healthcare, scientific and commercial issues that our clients and candidates are facing. From our discussions we understand what’s important and what we need to be doing to fill vacancies with the most suitably qualified candidates.
