The Position
As a theatre nurse, you will be responsible for assisting surgeons and anaesthetists in operating theatres and provide patient care throughout the preoperative period, from preoperative assessment to postoperative recovery. They work in a highly technical and fast-paced environment, allowing you to also be cross trained in other areas of surgical to broaden your skills. Key Responsibilities:
Preparing patients for surgery by reviewing their medical histories, obtaining consent, and ensuring they are ready for the procedure.
Ensuring the operating theatre is set up correctly, including sterilisation of equipment, positioning of surgical instruments and preparing the necessary medication and equipment required for the operation.
Assisting the surgical team during the operation, ensuring that all necessary equipment and instruments are available and that the patient is safe throughout the procedure.
Monitoring the patient's vital signs and ensuring their well-being during and after the operation, including administering medication as required.
Ensuring the safe transfer of patients to and from the operating theatre and their recovery after the surgery.
Providing emotional support to patients and their families throughout the preoperative period.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree or diploma in nursing, with a specialisation in preoperative nursing or operating room nursing.
AHPRA registration
Knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, and equipment.
Experience in the management of perioperative patients, including preoperative assessment, intraoperative and postoperative care.
Good communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
Attention to detail, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Flexibility to work on a rotating shift basis
Be willing to be cross trained in other therapeutic areas
