"...entering the recruitment industry and helping talented people find the perfect role for them has always felt like the natural career path for me."

Why did you decide to enter in the recruitment industry?

I've always wanted to step into the world of recruitment because of the difference we can make to people, helping them to achieve their aspirations and career goals - securing a job that you love is a wonderful feeling, so being able to help people secure jobs they love is immensely rewarding! And whilst I had once aspired to become a doctor, I unfortunately did not have the stomach for such a life-changing role, so entering the recruitment industry and helping talented people find the perfect role for them has always felt like the natural career path for me.

"the appeal of working in healthcare is having the ability to positively impact every walk of life..."

What was it about healthcare that appealed to you?

Healthcare affects every living soul on the planet - no matter what we might be suffering with, we all want to receive the best care possible. So for me, the appeal of working in healthcare is having the ability to positively impact every walk of life, regardless of who (or what) you are.

"I am very proud to have helped this candidate break into the healthcare industry and progress their career in a short amount of time."

Tell us about your most memorable role placement. What were the challenges and achievements?

I've only been in the industry a short time, but I would say my greatest achievement so far would be making my very first placement.

I helped to place a wild-card candidate into a temp role with a medical device company within my 2nd week of joining HPG - 3 months later, that wild-card candidate has now been offered a permanent role with the same company. I am very proud to have helped this candidate break into the healthcare industry and progress their career in a short amount of time.

"I've even done some farm work in rural Australia!"

What education background do you have that helps you with your current job?

After completing my core high-school qualifications, I did a further 2 years of study at high school before completing an apprenticeship through the UK government - I was studying business administration whilst working full-time for the UK Government as a Policy Advisor.

I think the role as well as the knowledge of business administration gave me a good range of skills - written and verbal communication, utilising different systems and just confidence in myself in general. Starting that role, I was terrified of having to make phone calls, especially to people who were much more senior in their careers (and age!) but over time I grew my confidence and the more I made those calls, the more effective I became.

I've also performed a variety of different roles since then and I think that is crucial to anyone's personal development - performing different job roles in different industries teaches you so many different skills and qualities that will help you in the long-run, irrespective of what career path you decide to go down.

If you are wondering what roles I have done - I went from a Policy Advisor for the UK Government to becoming a bartender in an sports bar, as well as a warehouse assistant for a car cleaning product manufacturer, a customer service role with a wine company, a customer attendant in a betting shop, customer service for a medical company... I've even done some farm work in rural Australia!

Why a client or candidate should work with you?

In short - I genuinely care about the work I do and I want to help them as much as possible in my capacity as a consultant.

One of my greatest traits is having this desire to try and understand every minute detail about someone or something.

So in terms of candidates - I want to learn about their experiences and understand as much about them as possible. Why did they study that particular degree? Why did they decide to start a career in that industry? What motivates them to get out of bed every morning? What are they like as an employee and as a person? I will dig beneath the surface and engage with them on a personal level, building rapport and long-term relationships. This means I can help my candidates as best as possible with their career, finding opportunities that are perfect for them.

In terms of clients - I will take the time to listen to them as well as ask questions that allow me to understand their business needs and how I can best help them as a consultant. My relationships with candidates means I'll have a greater and more reliable talent pool of temp and permanent candidates to call upon, which in turn means I can help clients fill their skill shortages quicker and with credible candidates that have the skills to perform the duties of the role.

"...the right employer will appreciate you for who you are as a person and cherish having you in their team."

Your Personal Advice for Candidates

It sounds cliché, but I think the best piece of advice is to be yourself - your skills and characteristics will not suit every employer, but the right employer will appreciate you for who you are as a person and cherish having you in their team.

I would also suggest that if you are someone who is not confident with interviews, to read-over your resume and experience before an interview. It will keep your experience fresh in your mind, helping you to answer questions from an interviewer without having to pause and think about an answer - it will just roll off the tip of your tongue! The better you prepare, the more confident you will feel and the better you will perform in an interview.
